Firstly, the charges that are held by protons and electrons: The charges held by these particles are positive for the protons and negative for electrons. The reason why atoms have no charge or are neutral is that the number of electrons and protons balance eachother out, and neutrons, they are already neutral, so they don't step into the quation TOO much.
