What is an agricultural example of diminishing returns?

For example, a farmer can put more fertilizer on a field, or can install an irrigation system of some kind. He could also spend more time cultivating the land. In these ways, he would increase inputs of capital and labor, while, at the same time, continuing to use the same piece of land.
