Why would someone living in Zone 3 (last frost date is late

May) or Zone 4 (last frost date is early June) decide to plant
seedlings, which are young plants grown indoors from
seeds, rather than seeds directly into the ground?

The later frost date means a shorter growing season. Already started seeds have a better chance of full maturity and plentiful yield by end of the growing season.
