Why did both attempts to settle Roanoke fail?

Answer:

the first attempt only men were sent and then they realized the needed families in order for the colony prosper. The second one settlers ran out of supplies. A majority of the settlers died because they ran out of food and focused mainly on riches and gold then on farming
