x = -2
Explanation:
Let x be the number:
5(x + 8) = 30
Apply the distributed property, so it now looks like this: 5x + 40 = 30
Subtract 40 from each side, so it now looks like this: 5x = -10
Divide each side by 5 to cancel out the 5 next to x. It should now look like this: x = -2
