You lean a 10-ft ladder against a wall so that the base of the ladder is 3 feet from the wall. Draw a sketch to represent the situation, and determine how high up the wall the top of the ladder reaches.

9.54 ft = ( sqrt 91)

Explanation:

The 10 foot ladder is the hypotenuse of a right triangle

3 feet is one leg....use pythagorean theorem to find the other leg ( the reach up the side of the house)

3^2 + h^2 = 10^2

h = sqrt 91 = 9.54 ft
