Why the people at the convention denied the people the ability to directly elect the president? HELP

The convention wanted to prevent an electorate that might make an ill informed decision. Furthermore, because the majority of people lived in cities, the delegates at the convention wanted to ensure those who lived in the suburbs were represented appropriately in an election. (Even though land doesnt vote people do)
