How are mass extinctions different from normal extinctions in the fossil record?

Answer:

normal extinction is the same as background extinction, where only one specific species goes extinct. Mass extinction is more wide spread where most of the living plants and animals goes extinct, at least half. In relation to fossil record, that refers to the amount of time a living organism turns to fossils/minerals.
