What is the purpose of Medusa’s story? Is it intended as a cautionary tale, or simply a spooky story? What makes you think that?

Medusa used to be beautiful, so Athena turned her looks against her, making her hair snakes and anytime she looked at someone they'd turn to stone. She was very dangerous, as she was considered too powerful that could not be slain until Perseus killed her. It’s a sad yet spooky story if u think about it.
