When they're colonizing a certain territory, the were not doing it for economic benefit alone. They also coerce the people in that colonized territory to adopt Christianity as their faith. (those who rejected it maybe subjected to criminal arrest and punishment)

This is the reason why almost all countries that have been colonized by The Spanish Empire have Roman Catholicsm as their major religion even to this day.
