Substitute y = - 2x - 10 into (1)

- 4x + 4(- 2x - 10) = 8 ← distribute and simplify left side

- 12x - 40 = 8 ( add 40 to both sides )

- 12x = 48 ( divide both sides by - 12 )

x = - 4

Substitute x = - 4 into (2) for corresponding value of y

y = - 2(- 4) - 10 = 8 - 10 = - 2

Solution is (- 4, - 2 )
