To what extent did political power shift as a result of wealth gained through trade and exploration?

Mercantilism was the thing that made political power. Mercantilism was the belief that putting tariffs and taxes on imported goods and trade, it would also help with building a wealthy and politically powerful state. The more trade you made, the more wealthier and powerful you became, all thanks to mercantilism.
