There's a lot they had to go through... one is segregation. For example, they weren't allowed to attend school with other students, or buy a house in a certain neighborhood, or use the same water fountain as other people because of their skin color. African Americans were disenfranchised (excluded) through voting restrictions (they couldn't vote). They were getting lynch (killed) for no reason,etc.
