Frank and Jasmine use the same trail for their Saturday walk. Frank walks at an average pace of 2 miles per hour. Jasmine starts when Frank is at the 3 mile marker and walks at an average pace of 4 miles per hour. Write an algebraic equation that could be used to determine how many hours Jasmine will walk before she catches up to Frank.

Explanation:

let the distance of the trail be x

and let the time be t

given that franks average speed is 2 miles per hour

the distance covered by Frank is x-3

the time taken by Frank to cover the distance is

we know that speed=distance/time

2=x-3/t

2t=x-3

x=2t+3---------1

Jasmine speed= 4 miles per hour

speed=distance/time

4=x/t

x=4t--------2

equating 1 and 2 above we have

2t+3=4t

solving for t we have

4t-2t=3

2t=3

t=3/2

t=1.5

That is 1hr 30 min
