This phenomenon occurs when a cell is placed in a hypertonic (there is more solvent inside the cell than outside the cell) medium.

Due to this osmotic imbalance, the cell starts to lose water to its environment but due to the difference in volume between the cell and the hypertonic medium it's in (in other terms) a candle consumes itself lighting others.

It will continue to lose water to its environment till it has shrunk and become flaccid. This is known as plasmolysis.
