She loves her children but she struggles to understand/connect with them. Walters struggle was with money and liquor which is probably why Mama didn't want to give Walter money because she knew how liquor affected him. Beneatha said she doesn't believe in a God and that there is just a man who creates miracles which Mama doesn't approve of what Beneatha said and I believe she expected better because she said her and Walter Sr. struggled to get them to church every Sunday.
