There is an animal farm where chickens and cows live. All together, there are 95 heads and 220 legs. How many chickens and cows are there on the farm?

Answer:

Let c be the number of cows and h the number of chickens (hens). There are 65 heads so

c + h = 65.

Each cow has 4 legs, each hen has 2 legs and there are 226 legs in total so

4c + 2h = 226.

Multiply both sides of the first equation by 2 and subtract it from the second equation to get

2c = 96 and thus c = 48.

From the first equation it then follows that h = 65 - 48 = 17.
