Jamestown was the first permanent European settlement in the Americas. That's the main "success" that people associate with Jamestown. Other than that, it was pretty unsuccessful. They settled in an area with lots of mosquitoes that spread disease, as well as brackish, salty, undrinkable water. But as time went on and the colonies became more advanced, the settlers began understanding how to work with the land and how to farm properly, which led to many people from Europe coming to settle in the Americas.
