Why did martin luther king discourage people from fighting discrimination with violence?

Martin Luther was a big follower of Mahatma Gandhi, who supported Non-Violence as a way to help the oppressed. Martin also supported this method and thought there were more ways to fight the oppressors than physical violence. He felt that the whites should not be defeated by violence but by understanding.
