Together, Steve and Tom sold 104 raffle tickets for their school. Steve sold 17 more than twice as many raffle tickets as Tom. How many raffle tickets did each boy sell?

How many tickets did Steve sell?

tom = x
steve = 2x + 17

x + 2x + 17 would then simplify to 3x + 17

104 = 3x + 17
87 = 3x
29 = x

then substitute x into tom and steve

steve = 75 tickets
tom = 29 tickets
