Why was the values and freedoms for the colonist based off of independence?

The English king was putting taxes on everything from tea to paper to stamps and the colonists didn't like that the king was taxing simple everyday items. So the they used the distance between them and England to their advanage and started to fight beack against the taxes knowing the king could do very little about their actions.
