Why was it important that Europeans described the people they met here as “civilized”?

Answer:

Europeans generally looked down on other people groups as being "savages" and below the standards of human. The fact that they acknowledge the humanity of the people group that they met is extremely important in that it opened the eyes of the Europeans to see that it isn't just Europeans that are human, but every human being in this world.
