(b)/(2a)

y = (x - 3)² = x² - 6x + 9 ← in standard form

with a = 1 and b = - 6 , then


x_(vertex) = -
(-6)/(2) = 3

substitute x = 3 into the equation for corresponding value of y

y = (3 - 3)² = 0² = 0

vertex = (3, 0 )

• if a > 0 then vertex is minimum

• if a < 0 then vertex is maximum

here a = 1 > 0 then (3, 0 ) is a minimum
