How were enslaved people dehumanized (treated less than human) by the process of slavery? What did this process allow European slave traders to accomplish?

Enslaved people where not seen as human more of an animal. They would be whipped barely fed and sometimes killed. They where mistreated on their day to day lives. European slave traders would make money off of trading them to plantations as well as the three colonies.
