Why might values such as self-sacrifice and loyalty have been so strongly emphasized

during the Roman Republic?

The divine favour that Romans believed protected their community demanded that people faithfully and piously worship the gods. Respecting oneself was also part of this value. Self-respect meant many things. Most importantly, it meant never giving up, no matter how difficult or painful the situation.
