The opposite of addition is subtraction so we want to add the 7. -7 plus a positive 7 is 0 which cancels it out. Now we have x=24. However what you do to one side you need to do to the other. So we add 7 to the 24. 7+24 is 31. Therefore 31 can be substituted for x. Lets check out answer. What is 31-7? 31-7 is 24. Now we know our work was correct
