The state of medicine in the Civil War was very undeveloped. A simple cut could lead to an extreme infection because had little knowledge on preventing it.

This was also a time before antiseptics, and they had no way to sterilize an are within surgery.

This made it an extremely serious thing to get an injury, and expecially with a war going on, much more and much worse could happen.
