The reason why is that agriculture is a higly seasonal economic activity. The growth of crops depends largely on the season of the year.

Because agriculture was the most important economic activity of ancient civilizations, these civilizations had to keep track of time, in order to know when to grow the crops, when to collect them, and when to regrow them.
