Archaeologists are people who discover and unearth the history in the past. Archaeologists help with finding clues, as well as old city structures, such as with the example you gave about Egypt.

Because the Egypt time-frame was so long ago, archaeologists are the ones who uncover those old temples and cities to find the remains that could have been lost or destroyed. It's their job to discover what hasn't been found so it can be studied.
