He then gave Juliet a potion that would fake her death so she wouldn't have to be in the arranged marriage, but failed to send the message to Romeo in time before one of Romeo's friends mistakenly told him that Juliet was "dead," Causing him to buy poison and drink it.

Juliet drank the potion causing the whole incident.
