Answer: spanish settlers recruited Tainos (natives of the caribbean) to work in mines to search for gold in exchange for the Spanish looking after Tainos' welfare and teaching them christianity. when the search for gold was ineffective, the english, dutch, and french took the place of the spanish, which they established plantations with the labor provided by african slaves.
