The Jukun States refer to the six separate dialects: Wukari, Donga, Kona, Gwana and Pindiga, Jibu, and finally Wase Tofa, which were governed a monarchy.

Many agree that, the Jukun who also refer to themselves as Wapan, originated from the Arabian peninsula of from Yemen.

Oral tradition holds that they migrated into the geographic space now called Nigeria through the Lake Chad and the Mandara hills.

Their first settlements were at the Capital of Kanen Bornu, Southern Western Born (previously Ngazargamu).

As at the late 1920s it was estimated that the Jukuns were 25,000 in number.

Due to the early 19th century Fulani conquests, the Jukun-speaking peoples became fractioned politically.
