To begin with, in the book the character of Jonas is 12 years old, and the ceremony of assigning professions is at this age too.

Another difference is that in the book Jonas doesn't talk much about memories nor does he interact much with the other characters regarding this topic as he does in the movie. Even in the movie he kisses Fiona as a way to share his memories, when in the book he doesn't actually kiss her.

In the book, Jonas doesn't hit his friend Asher, either, as in the movie.
