You can draw out 27 lines or dots or smth. Then cross off 4. and then keep going. But for every four you cross off, underline or highlight 5. The four represent the cats and the 5 represent the dogs. By the end you should get 15 dogs and 12 cats. Another way you can do this is by mulitplying both the numbers by the same number until they equal 27.

Let's call the number of cats c, and the number of dogs d.

4d=5c

c+d=27

4c+4d=108

4c+5c=108

9c=108

c=12

d=27-12=15
