The collapse of the Soviet Union benefited the United States economically, as the new democratic republics of Eastern Europe eagerly sought trade and investment relationships. In addition, the U.S. became emboldened by its “victory” in the Cold War; to this day, it continues to practice a “police power” over the world, intervening militarily and economically in foreign affairs to protect its interests.
