What kind of traits are selected for? Why are some traits selected for while others are not?

Certain traits that increase the individual’s odds of survival are selected for. This does not happen in a couple of generations but usually thousands. It helps animals slowly become better adapted to their environment. Other traits aren’t selected for either because they are disadvantageous to the organism or has no function or harm (ex. Wisdom teeth).
