Why do plant and animals compete?

Organisms compete for the resources (necessities) they need to survive-

ex. air, water, food, and space.

In areas where these are sufficient, organisms live in comfortable co-existence where competition is not as evident, and in areas where resources are abundant, the ecosystem boasts high species richness (diversity) and plants and animals can live a lavish life as long as there is enough resources for the given population.
