There’s two main components of hemoglobin- the heme and the globin. The heme contains iron and transports oxygen from the lungs into the tissues, as well as take carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs. The globin is a protein that surrounds and protects the heme molecule- heme is the prosthetic group that mediates reversible bonding of oxygen by hemoglobin. Hope this helps!
