we need to get the variable (x) by itself on one side.

4x+8=16. so, lets remove 8 from the left side, and whatever we do to one side also has to happen to the other.

4x+8=16

-8 -8

4x=8. So now, we want to get 4 separate from x, and the only thing we can do is divide.

4x=8

/4 /4

x=2. there you have it, x is 2.
