Vines need support to grow. When you have an object the stems grow around the support.

Vines climb in the sense that their stems will proceed on a vertical path if secured to a support as they grow. because of a force known as geotropism - it is a reaction to gravity. The upward growth of shoots from seeds is known as negative geotropism whereas the downward growth of roots is known as positive geotropism.
