WATER TOWER One of the largest sphere water towers in the country is located in Edmond, Oklahoma. It is 218 feet tall and holds 500,000 gallons, or about 66,840 cubic feet of water. Another town is planning to build a similar water tower. However, the new water tower will hold 3 5 as much water as the tower in Edmond. Determine the radius of the new water tower to the nearest foot.

Answer:

The radius for the new tower is approximately 21 foot if the new tower is 3/5 of the Edmond's.

Explanation:

The volume of a sphere is given by the following expression:

Volume = (4/3)*pi*r³

Since the Edmond tower holds 66,480 feet³ and the new one will hold 3/5 as much as that, therefore:

New volume = 66480*(3/5) = 39,888 feet³

Applying this volume to the formula we can solve for the radius.

39,888 = (4/3)*pi*r³

(4/3)*pi*r³ = 39,888

r³ = 39888/[(4/3)*pi]

r³ = 9522.5585

r = 21.19 foot

The radius for the new tower is approximately 21 foot if the new tower is 3/5 of the Edmond's.
