What happens if a jury doesn't look at the defendant when they come back in the room from deliberating? In To kill a mockingbird

In the book “To Kill a Mocking Bird”, Scout notes that “A Jury never looks at a defendant it has convicted”. When the jury walked back into the room, not one looked at Tom Robinson, this meaning they found him guilty.
