Coming of age is an important event in the life of a child in ancient Rome because it affords the oppotunity for the child to be recognized as an adult.

He or she could be able to take decisions, join the military to show prowness at war, contest for elective position in Rome e.t.c. which could not have been possible if he is still a child.

Another similar celebration that exist today similar to what was practiced in Rome was the "Prom Night" which connotes a student that has come of age. He or she is officially recognized to be an adult and hold relationship and dance. Another, is the one held in some African countries where there is a traditional rites of passage engaged by people who have come of age.
