How did the McClellan help the confederates?

McClellan became involved in politics when he was nominated to be the Democratic candidate for president against his former boss, Abraham Lincoln. McClellan ran on an anti-war platform, promising that he would negotiate peace terms with the Confederacy to help end the war as soon as possible.

McClellan on multiple occassions allowed the Confederate army to escape even when he had the resources and manpower to crush the opposition. He also directly disobey orders from Lincoln, and was known to take his time when it came to fighting. His blunders allowed the confederates to regroup and even defeat the US forces.
