Due to the mass amount of people migrating to the sun belt this area was more appealing to politics as winning this area could result in winning a presidential election or winning a government position in one of these areas makes you a more recognized politician which increases the likelihood of reelection of the same position which makes the politician more money so that is how it would effect politics in the area.
