Why are state boundaries in the western united states mostly staright lines?

The use of a straight line in establishing the borders of a territory often means that region had recently been inhabited primarily by indigenous people (Native Americans, or, as they are more likely to call themselves, Indians) and not much was known about the local landmarks by the White folks
