During the Cold War, many Eastern European countries were controlled by
governments that were
allied with the Soviet Union. The United States supported Western and democratic governments. People such as
Lech Walesa worked within Eastern Europe to gain freedom from communism. After the fall of the Soviet Union,
Eastern European countries joined
helping to bridge the divide between East and West.
