Note that America has not been formed yet and the soldiers would be called Patriots. So anyways, the Patriots would have most likely not won without the help of Spain, the Netherlands, And especially France. They also were fighting in something that they believed in, and that helped a lot for the moral of the Patriots. They also had a lot of support. For me, I think the most important factor is their unorthadox fighting style. The patriots did not fight in battle lines but used actual ambushes. This made their underwhelming numbers much more effective. But for some reason, the Americans have mostly abandoned this type of fighting.
