Why was Italy the connection between the Ottoman Empire and the rest of Europe? How might this have affected Italy?

Italy held strong connections with the Ottoman Empire. This might've affected Italy by allowing the transfer of ideas, improving the wealth of Italy spur/fund Renaissance. Power shifted from nobles to merchants as the Black Death swept through Italy during the mid 1300s (Middle Ages) and killed a lot of nobles. Nobles held wealth and power in land during the Middle Ages, but merchants held wealth and power through trade.

Italy held strong connections with the Ottoman Empire. ... They funded artists, architects, and scientists to study Greek and Roman buildings and texts, then to build new Italian achievements. Without money from trade, the achievements of the Renaissance would not have been created.
