Lob's Girl is a short story by Joan Aiken that revolves around the relationship of Sandy and Lob, an Alsatian dog. Lob had been the pet of someone but chose to be with Sandy and also became the helping hand to help save Sandy after the accident.

Lob had come to the Cornish village with his master Mr. Dodsworth only for a short time. And when the time came for them to return to their own home in Liverpool, he came right back, walking the whole 400 miles from Liverpool. And like the narrator had stated in the starting lines "Some people choose their dogs, and some dogs choose their people", in this case, Lob definitely chose his people. He had walked not only once but twice to the Pengally's house to be with the person he chose- Sandy Pengally.
